Orphan Sunday 2012

November 4, 2012 - Orphan Sunday

Well, this is getting posted later that I had wanted it to on Orphan Sunday, but it is still November 4, 2012!

“Learn to do good. Seek justice. Help the oppressed. Defend the cause of orphans. Fight for the rights of widows.” Isaiah 1:17

Now that our eyes and hearts have truly been opened to the plight of orphans around the world we want to make sure that we are doing everything we can to “Defend the cause of Orphans.”

Here are some facts according to the Christian Alliance for Orphans:
  •         153 million children worldwide have lost either one parent (“single orphan”) or both parents.
  •         17.8 million Children worldwide have lost both parents (“double orphan”).
  •      There are currently 130,000 children available for adoption through the US Foster Care System.
  •       These estimates do NOT include the 2-8 Million children living in “institutions” nor do they include the vast number of children who are living on the streets, exploited for labor, victims of trafficking, or participating in armed groups.

10 Ways ANYONE Can Care for the Orphan and Waiting Child

  1.    PRAY for them – Tape a waiting child’s picture to your dashboard or bathroom mirror and pray for them every time you see it. (visit Reece’s Rainbow, Adopt US Kids, or Rainbow Kids)
  2.     SPEAK UP for them – Become a court appointed advocate for a child in foster care (visit NationalCASA)
  3.     PROVIDE for their needs -  Give sacrificially to a reputable orphanage OR Organize a drive to collect school supplies for children in foster care or shoes for orphans overseas (visit Because International)
  4.   SUPPORT those who support them – Support and pray for foster parents OR Encourage those who are adopting
  5.    PROTECT them from harm – Become a foster parent or emergency foster parent OR Raise money for those who help to remove children from the streets (visit World Orphans)
  6.     VISIT them where they are – Go on a mission trip to an orphanage OR Take dinner to a foster group-home on a regular basis
  7.    GIVE sacrificially to them – Support reputable orphan care organizations on a regular basis OR Contribute generously to an adoptive family to help them offset their costs(blog post #3?!)
  8.     ENCOURAGE them to press on – Sponsor a child (visit Compassion) OR Become a mentor or tutor to a teenager in a foster group-home
  9.     ADOPT them into your family – Give a child a home through international, domestic, or foster care adoption
  10.          MOBILIZE your church for them – Be a catalyst in your church or community for starting a sustained orphan ministry (visit HopeForOrphans)
We also remember God’s heart for us,once orphans of sin.

In the very place where it was said to them, ‘You are not my
people,’ there they will be called ‘children of the living God.

Here We Go...

Sydney-Born May 2009

"My friends, adoption is redemption.  It's costly , exhausting, expensive, and outrageous.  Buying back lives costs so much.  When God set out to redeem us, it killed Him."

~Derek Loux

"Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you." James 1:27 (NLT)

September 12, 2012- The day our eyes and hearts were opened

The day started out like pretty much any other day, I went to work, Kevin went to work later, I came home and started catching up on what all my friends and family had been up to on Facebook during the day.  As I scrolled through posts I came upon this sweet face that my cousin Jennifer Cooper Willis had posted. Immediately I was drawn in to those amazing brown eyes and I knew I wanted to show her picture to Kevin when he got home. So, I did, and he said, "She's cute..." and that was it; we didn't talk about her at all that night.

The next day, we confessed to each other that through out the day we had both constantly been going to Reece's Rainbow and looking at her picture.  Kevin said, "Her eyes burned a hole in my soul and my heart aches like I've fallen in love for the first time."  We spent a few days trying to find out more about Sydney, the adoption process and talk about the fact they we were both ready to consider adopting a child, internationally, no less!

God had placed adoption on both of our hearts many years ago, but we hadn't really discussed it because we weren't sure how the other might feel about the idea. However, we had both also prayed that the Lord would bring us onto the "same page" about it when the time was right...September 12, 2012.

We both knew that this is a huge decision that should not be entered into without a lot of prayer so we began to pray about it and reached out to a few friends and family members and asked them to pray for us as we began to seriously consider starting this process.  We also decided that we should begin to pray for Sydney and Pray that God would provide the perfect parents for her (hoping He would allow us) but also, that He may have a different plan. Both of our hearts ached at the thought of somebody else being her mommy or daddy, but if that is what God wanted then we would have to be OK with it.  We knew that he could have just been using Sydney as the child to "get us on the same page."

September 26, 2012 - The day we said Yes!

As we began to research the process and the initial costs and requirements we discovered that we would need to have $5000 up front for all of the initial fees.

"We just moved 2000 miles and started new jobs, where are we going to get that kind of $$??!!"

We knew that if this was what God wanted for us He would provide a way for us to have that money "in hand." We both prayed about it and we talked about options and nothing we could think of seemed to make any sense or really gave us the whole amount.  Then, one day I remembered that I had and account that I was going to transfer to Texas, but had not yet sent in the paperwork (because we didn't have any envelopes) ...what happened to that paperwork?  I couldn't find it anywhere!!  Which meant, that I could have it re-sent and instead of transferring the funds we could cash it out and that would give us the money we needed! Sometimes God answers prayers through lost paperwork!  So, we said,"Yes, we want to adopt Sydney!"... on September 26, 2012 (the new paperwork arrived on September 27th!)

October 1, 2012 - The Paperwork Begins!

Reece's Rainbow, HAPS (the Adoption Agency), Children Of All Nations (our Homestudy Agency)...they all need paperwork... a lot of paper work!!! Oh, wait we can't do some of the paperwork until we have Texas Driver's Licenses...ugg! To get a TX Driver's License you need a copy of your birth can see where this trail leads! Finally, though, we have gotten to the point where we have  completed most of the initial paperwork.

November 1, 2012 - Officially Committed!

We had already planned to complete some of our paperwork today by making our 2nd trip to the post-office to get our Passports renewed.  Our first trip, last week, was super frustrating because the first location we went to "has a new appointment only policy...sorry we haven't updated our website yet..."  Then, at the second location "Sorry, your passport is over 15 years old and you changed your name so you have to have copies of your birth certificates and your marriage licence." But, the State Dept. website didn't say anything about that....

Today we went to the second location for the second time and had a different person helping us.  She was confused at what the lady told us last week..."You don't need those things, your TX Driver's Licence has your current name, right?"...frustrating! She was really nice and really funny thought!

Oh well, I think that God sent us back there so that I could have a nice chat with the cashier who recently had a dream that she was adopting a little boy and share with her our story so far. Even though it was a pain, our trip to the Post Office today was a blessing!

After the Passport mission was complete we went and had our final Reece's Rainbow paperwork Notarized and Faxed!  I wasn't expecting to get our Family Support Page link today, so quickly after completing the paperwork, but "Ding" at 4:07 PM I got the best email notification! We are now an "Official" Reece's Rainbow Family and can announce our commitment to this Sweet Angel on the other side of the world, so that she will be an orphan no more!!

"Orphans are easier to ignore before you know their names. They are easier to ignore before you see their faces.  IT is easier to pretend they're not real before you hold them in your arms.  But once you do, everything changes."
